However, some of the deadliest conflicts of the last decade deescalated between 20, such as those in Afghanistan and Syria. Several new or previously dormant conflicts reignited in 2020: state-based conflict was recorded in Tanzania for the first time in the dataset and the war in Azerbaijan resulted in more than three times as many fatalities as ever before.
